The story had held us, round the fire, sufficiently breathless, but except the obvious remark that it was gruesome, as, on Christmas Eve in and old house, a strange tale should essentially be, I remember no comment uttered till somebody happened to say that it was the only case he had met in which such a visitation had fallen on a child. |

"Infernal, then!" I almost cheerfully rejoined. "He has provided for himself as well. But come!" |
I read The Turn of the Screw back in 1997 but it's on my TBR pile for a re-read. Mine beginning is from Mary Modern.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great opening line. I read it earlier this year and really loved it, cant wait to see what you think
ReplyDeleteInteresting beginning :) Have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteEverytime I see Henry James I think, "You should read that," and then I don't. lol One day...
ReplyDeleteThis is one of those books that I know I read yet remember nothing about it beyond that I thought it was creepy. I can see why. The language almost requires a translator for me. So old fashioned!
ReplyDeleteI never read anything from the author but it sure sounds pretty good book!

Good one! Thanks for stopping by today!
ReplyDeleteThat is a good beginning - makes you wonder right from the bat and sets the tone for the creepiness to come.

Hi Juju
ReplyDeleteThanks for the hint. Nope, I didn't but I checked out the author's website and Maybe This Time looks to be an interesting read.
That's a meaty opening sentence - classic spooky, eerie...
