Book Beginnings and Friday 56 : The Turn of the Screw by Henry James

The Turn of the Screw
From Amazon:
"The Turn of the Screw" is an intense psychological tale of terror. It begins in an old house on Christmas Eve. It is the story of a Governess who comes to live with and take care of two young children. The Governess loves her new position in charge of the young children, however she is soon disturbed when she begins to see ghosts.

The story had held us, round the fire, sufficiently breathless, but except the obvious remark that it was gruesome, as, on Christmas Eve in and old house, a strange tale should essentially be, I remember no comment uttered till somebody happened to say that it was the only case he had met in which such a visitation had fallen on a child.

"Infernal, then!" I almost cheerfully rejoined. "He has provided for himself as well. But come!"

  5. This is one of those books that I know I read yet remember nothing about it beyond that I thought it was creepy. I can see why. The language almost requires a translator for me. So old fashioned!

  12. That is a good beginning - makes you wonder right from the bat and sets the tone for the creepiness to come.
