Lover Avenged

Lover Avenged (Black Dagger Brotherhood, Book 7)Title : Lover Avenged
Author : J. R. Ward
Reading Dates : 19 Apr - 28 Apr 2010

Black Dagger Brotherhood Series. Lover Avenged is the 7th book in J. R. Ward's The Black Dagger Brotherhood series. The books in the series includes :
  • Dark Lover
  • Lover Eternal
  • Lover Awakened
  • Lover Revealed
  • Lover Unbound
  • Lover Enshrined
  • Lover Avenged

Book Summary of Lover Avenged.

Quite a number of events occur in this particular Black Dagger Brotherhood book. First, we have the main protagonist Rehvenge foiling an assassination attempt on the vampire king and leader of the brotherhood, Wrath. Of course this inadvertently works for Rehvenge and his lady love, Ehlena. Montrag was planning on revealing Rehvenge as a sympath and having him take the fall for the murder after. Its just too bad the tool he chose sided with the vampire family his sister married into. As a side benefit, the destitute Ehlena who is a distant relative of Montrag inherits his fortune.

Then, there's John Matthew's relationship with his adoptive father, Tohr and the half-sympath Xhex. The young male vampire already has sexual and abandonment hang-ups due to being abandoned as a newborn and being raped prior to his transition. Now after being left behind once too many times by Tohr and having his romantic feelings rejected, John Matthew chooses to be the one doing the forsaking instead of being the forsaken one. Both Tohr and Xhex realize their mistake too late seemingly.

Finally, Rehvenge and Ehlena are mated of course in the end. But not before Rehvenge nearly dies sacrificing himself to protect his half-sympath identity. The Brothers rescue Rehvenge but lose Xhex in the process when they come up against not only the sympath colony but the lessers lead by Lash. The supposedly dead male vampire is not only alive but has been resurrected as a lesser with extraordinary powers. The brothers can only hope that Xhex survives until they rescue her from Lash. The only plus is Rehvenge's new role as the king of the sympaths with both his uncle and half-sister dead.

Book Review of Lover Avenged.
Lover Avenged is Rehvenge and Ehlena's tale. Rehvenge is Bella's half-brother who happens to be a half-sympath and the local drug lord. Bella is of course unaware of either her brother's alter-ego since neither him or the vampire family she married into has chosen to enlighten her. Rehvenge, even going so far as to fake his own death when the threat of his secret coming to light becomes imminent. And that's among  one of the  many reasons why I can't seem to enjoy this story. Many of the trials and tribulations our hero and heroine encounters seems to be unnecessary. More a product of their own " I so don't deserve this"  attitude more than anything that it becomes really irritating. The path to true love is never smooth, at least in the world of paranormal romance fiction, but is it necessary to make a production out of it ?

Then, there's Rehvenge and Ehlena's love affair. Love is blind of course but I fail to see the connection between them. It is explained to us that Rehvenge is first drawn to Ehlena because she shares his disconnection from the rest of the world. And once they get to know each other, they realize how wonderful the other is and thus fall hopeless in love. Yeah, right ... I'd like to know when with so many other threads going on and with hardly any time or chemistry between the two main protagonists. We've got Wrath not only dealing with the pressures of being king of a race in a losing war and short on fighting power but also having to deal with his failing eyesight. Then, there's John Matthew who's finally decided to give up on Tohr since he can no longer bear to watch his father slowly killing himself. Or Tohr who finally realizes that he wasn't the only one to lose a loved one when his shellan was killed. Not the best of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. In fact, I'd consider this the worst of the series that I've read. The best being Zsadist and Bella's story in Lover Awakened.

Promises in Death

Promises in Death (In Death, No. 28)Title : Promises in Death
Author : J. D. Robb
Reading Dates : 17 Apr - 19 Apr 2010

Book Summary of Promises in Death.
Promises in Death is a part of the In Death series written by Nora Roberts as J. D. Robb. Every book is a new case for New York Police Department Lieutenant Eve Dallas to solve, usually with the involvement and assistance of her billionaire husband Roarke. In Promises in Death, Eve has the difficult task of informing long-time close friend, the Chief Medical Examiner Morris, of the murder of his lover. Detective Amaryllis Coltraine was murdered with her own weapon and now Eve must lead her team to find a cop-killer. The investigation takes a turn for the worst when suspicions of Coltraine being on the take comes to light. Coltraine's former lover, Alex Ricker, is the estranged son of Eve and Roarke's long-time nemesis and a suspected criminal. Was Coltraine dirty ? Was this the reason she was killed ? Or was it revenge against Eve and Roarke ? These are some of the questions Eve must answer in order to solve the murder.

Book Review of Promises in Death.
Promises in Death is not as interesting a read as some earlier books in the series. While it is difficult to guess the identity of the perpetrator early on in the story, the steps Lieutenant Eve Dallas to solve the homicide case is not as compelling. Perhaps because there does not seem to be sufficient clues for me to guess the killer's identity. There's not even enough for me to say "Oh, I missed that!".

Another important component of the story is the fun in watching Eve balance her police work with her marriage and friendships. But the jokes seems to have dried up or at least run stale. Everything seems to have already been done. How can being matron of honor with most of the work being done by her partner compare to balancing her own wedding and a murder case ? Too bad, but it maybe time for me to stop following the series.

Into Battle

Into Battle (The Seventh Tower, Book 5)Title : Into Battle
Author : Garth Nix
Reading Dates : 14 Apr - 17 Apr 2010

Seventh Tower Series. Into Battle is the 5th book in Garth Nix's The Seventh Tower series. The books in the series includes :
  • The Fall
  • Castle
  • Aenir

  • Above the Veil
  • Into Battle
  • The Violet Keystone

Book Summary of Into Battle.
Instead of resolving Tal's problems, his audience with the Empress Kathilde in Aenir underlines to Tal that the safety of their world greatly depends on his subsequent actions. Both the Empress and the Light Vizier are not only idiots but when they overthrew the previous Emperor Mercur they lost the Violet Keystone and placed themselves under the power of the Dark Vizier Sushin. Worst still is that Sushin is merely a Shadowpawn being controlled by the Shadow Sharrakor. The only stroke of luck is finding out that the Sunstone Tal and Milla had found earlier was in fact the Violet Keystone. Now, Tal must find a way to free the Keystone guardians to restore the Veil, convince the Chosen of the truth so that the Shadows are forced back to Aenir as well as restore the Violet Keystone which was split in half between Tal and Milla. To this end, Tal returns back to his body only to find himself in the midst of a war between Chosen and Icecarl. While trying to take advantage of the chaos to save his family, Tal is captured by Sushin instead.

Milla too has her share of problems. Although most of the Freefolk have agreed to help the Icecarls fight the Chosen, the Icecarls element of surprise is lost when ex-Chosen Jarnil betrays them. Thrown into battle before their main host and supplies can be gathered, all Milla and her available forces can do is attempt to hold the Underfolk levels of the Castle against both Chosen and Shadows.

Book Review of Into Battle.
I can't wait to read the conclusion to this series. Battle is joined and all parties are beginning their end game. Tal embarks on his chosen path to free the Keystone guardians, Milla leads her people in a war against the Shadows, the Freefolk aids the Icecarls to gain freedom from the Chosen and free-willed Shadows invade the Castle. How will it end ? Can the Icecarls and Chosen learn to work together ? Will Tal's mother be able to pass on his message to Milla in time ? How much time do they have before the Veil fails ? Can they restore it ? These and many questions beg to be answered. Into Battle is certainly an exciting read.

Above the Veil

Above the Veil (The Seventh Tower, Book 4)Title : Above the Veil

Reading Dates : 12 Apr - 14 Apr 2010

Seventh Tower Series. Above the Veil is the 4th book in Garth Nix's The Seventh Tower series. The books in the series includes :
  • The Fall
  • Castle
  • Aenir

  • Above the Veil
  • Into Battle
  • The Violet Keystone

Book Summary of Above the Veil.
Tal and Milla manage to elude their pursuers with the help of the Freefolk and Tal's great-uncle Ebbitt. Putting the information they each have together, they soon realize their world is in grave danger. For some unknown reason, Shadowmaster Sushin is conspiring to remove the Veil which protects their world from the Aenirans. Unfortunately, neither the Freefolk, Chosen or Icecarls seem able to work together. Milla chooses to return to her people with the news of the impending danger while Tal attempts to unravel the mystery behind the disappearance of the guardians of the Keystones.

Despite breaking their people's injunctions against Shadow magic, the Crones which govern the Icecarls spare her life and appoint her as their War-Chief . Milla is then given the task to lead the invasion force to the Castle. As for Tal, while he manages to recover the Red Keystone and its trapped guardian, he does not have the means to free Lokar. Not only that, Tal finds that their Castle has been invaded by a host of free-willed Shadows while most of the Chosen are away in Aenir. Desperate, Tal decides to seek out the Empress in hopes of ridding himself of his unwanted responsibility.

Book Review of Above the Veil.
Although Tal and Milla discover that the reason for the mysterious disappearances of Chosen over the years is related to the plot to remove the Veil which protects their world from Shadows, their mistrust and different beliefs do not permit them to work together. Thus despite their desperate situation, each chooses to goes their own way with Milla returning to the Icecarls while Tal attempts to locate the missing Keystone guardians. Instead of death, Milla is named the Icecarls War-Chief to lead the invasion force to the Castle. And meanwhile, Tal must escape from the army of free-willed Shadows guarding the Red Keystone. These and many more such events make for a rather exciting read. Whether it is Milla and Tal's escape from the pursuing Chosen, Milla's desperate flight back to the Ruin Ship or Tal's attempt to hide from an army of Shadows.

What will Tal and Milla do should their paths cross again ? Will these once allies be able to work together to oust the invading Aenirans or will they kill each other ? Why would Shadowmaster Sushin work against the Chosen ? In the end, how will Tal and Milla resolve this situation ? It will be interesting to see the choices Tal and Milla will make. These two who were once enemies turned trusted companions, only for betrayal to make them uneasy allies forced to work together for their survival.

Aenir

Aenir (The Seventh Tower, Book 3)Title : Aenir
Author : Garth Nix
Reading Dates : 10 Apr - 11 Apr 2010

Seventh Tower Series. Aenir is the 3rd book in Garth Nix's The Seventh Tower series. The books in the series includes :
  • The Fall
  • Castle
  • Aenir

  • Above the Veil
  • Into Battle
  • The Violet Keystone

Book Summary of Aenir.
Breaking the customs and rules of both their world, Tal binds the Storm Shepherds Odris and Adras as Milla and his Spiritshadow companions respectively despite Milla's vehement protests. Angered, Milla runs off with Odris trailing her. Knowing little of Aenir's dangers, both Tal and Milla soon find themselves escaping numerous life-threatening situations.

Tal and Milla are reunited when the Codex contacts them and instructs them on how to free it. For Tal, he needs the Codex to find and rescue his younger brother Gref. For Milla, who learns that 2000 years ago both Chosen and Icecarl once came together to fight a war against Aenirans, she realizes that the Chosen must be prevented from freeing Aenirans once again.

Although they recover the Codex, Tal's attempt to rescue Gref fails and they must once again flee from their enemies. With even the Empress's guards chasing them, Tal and Milla flee to lowest of the Underfolk levels.

Book Review of Aenir.
While the spirit world Aenir is teeming with what should be strange and dangerous creatures, the more interesting part of this tale is what happened 2000 years ago. While the Chosen and most of the Icecarls are unaware of the existence of the other and the Chosen seem to believe that Aenir exists for the sole purpose of providing them with Spiritshadow servants, Milla has learned otherwise. In the past, Chosen and Icecarl came together to fight a war against Aenir. The war ended with the Chosen creating the Veil which covers their world and the Icecarl casting a Forgetting and binding the Aenirans to their world. Why do the Chosen and Icecarls remember none of this ? What has any of this to do with Tal and his family who are so obviously being persecuted ? Why was the Codex stolen and hidden these past 22 years ? And what of the mysterious disappearances of the Chosen over the years ? Tal may have solved a small part of the puzzle when he himself was lured by an ancient Chosen into a trap and discovers the bones of other young Chosen, but what was the old man's purpose ? What will Tal and Milla find fleeing from the Empress's guards into the lowest levels of the Castle where the Chosen rarely enter ? I can't wait to find the answers to these questions.

Castle

Castle (The Seventh Tower #2)Title : Castle
Author : Garth Nix
Reading Dates : 8 Apr - 10 Apr 2010

Seventh Tower Series. Castle is the 2nd book in Garth Nix's The Seventh Tower series. The books in the series includes :
  • The Fall
  • Castle
  • Aenir

  • Above the Veil
  • Into Battle
  • The Violet Keystone

Book Summary of Castle.
With the help of his rather unpredictable companion, Milla an Icecarl from the Far-Raider clan, Tal has made it back to the Castle. Along the way, he even finds the item he almost died for, a Sunstone. But all is not well. From his great-uncle Ebbitt, Tal learns that his mother's condition has worsened and she has fallen into a comatose-like sleep. And Gref, his younger brother, has been captured by an unknown enemy. The only way to find him would be to seek out The Codex of All Things. The only catch being that the Codex has been lost for more than 20 years.

However before any of them can do more, they are attacked by the Chosen and only Ebbitt escapes. Tal is taken to the Pit while Milla is interrogated within the Hall of Nightmares. The Icecarls however have their own way of dealing with nightmares and for the first time ever the Chosen start to realize that contrary to their beliefs there are people living outside of the Castle. Tal escapes from the Pit with Ebbitt's help and they rescue Milla as well. To avoid the Chosen hunting them and to seek the Codex, Tal and Milla ventures into the spirit world Aenir with Ebbitt guarding their physical bodies.

Book Review of Castle.
Unfortunately the Chosen's world is not as interesting as the Icecarl's. Although there are apparently many creations of the Chosen, they are not as wondrous as the creatures populating that of the Ice. Part of this maybe because the Chosen has forgotten their creations of old and because Tal and Milla are too busy evading Tal's unseen enemies.

What is interesting is Tal's great-uncle Ebbitt. Though Tal has always thought of his great-uncle as strange, it seems he maybe more than he seems. Ebbitt seems to have a unusual understanding with the Underfolk and is aware of the many strange events and conspiracies going on in the Castle even if he does not know who is behind them. He also seems to have an unexpected knowledge of the Castle's secret ways.

At the end, we have Tal and Milla travelling into Aenir. What will these two find there ? Will Tal be able to bind a great Spiritshadow to him, find the lost Codex and rescue his brother Gref ? All interesting questions.

The Fall

The Fall (Seventh Tower #1)Title : The Fall
Author : Garth Nix
Reading Dates : 5 Apr - 7 Apr 2010

Seventh Tower Series. The Fall is the 1st book in Garth Nix's The Seventh Tower series. The books in the series includes :
  • The Fall
  • Castle
  • Aenir

  • Above the Veil
  • Into Battle
  • The Violet Keystone

Book Summary of The Fall.
13 year-old Tal's father Rerem is missing and possibly dead. His mother Graile is stricken with a mysterious illness and dying. Neither his younger siblings, 9-year old Gref and 3-year old Kusi, seem to comprehend the trouble the family is in. With the family's Primary Sunstone lost together with their father, their family will be unable to enter Aenir on the Day of Ascension. This would not only mean they would lose a chance to find a cure for Graile but their entire family could be demoted from Chosen to Underfolk forever.

All Tal's attempts to gain a Primary Sunstone seems to be doomed to failure. From asking for one from his cousins, winning one by attempting an Achievement or even seeking an audience with the Empress. Tal begins to feel as if someone is working against him with strange Chosen and Spiritshadows picking on him for no apparent reason and Shadowmaster Sushin purposefully making life more difficult for Tal. His great-uncle Ebbitt seems to agree with Tal that someone higher up has taken a disliking to their family and suggests Tal climb the Red Tower of the Castle they live in to steal Sunstones despite the enormous risk. Desperate, Tal agrees only to fall from the Tower into the unknown world outside.

Tal survives the fall with the help of his Shadowguard but is almost killed by Milla, an Icecarl of the Far-Raider Clan. The Far-Raider clan agrees to spare Tal and even help him home on the condition that he give them a Sunstone to replace their own failing one. Now Tal has to depend on Milla, a girl who sees him as an intruder to be killed, to navigate and survive on the ice.

Book Review of The Fall.
The world of the Chosen and the Icecarls that Garth Nix has created is certainly interesting. A world that is covered in darkness by a Veil created by the Chosen. Why this is done is a mystery that is yet to be explained.

Then, we have the Chosen in the Castle and the Icecarls who live circling this world of ice. Tal like all Chosen sees having free-willed Shadows which aid and protect them as normal. Those who do not possess such, like the Underfolk, are no more than servants to be lorded over. And since none of the Chosen are supposed to ever leave the Castle, it comes as a great surprise to him when he stumbles across the Icecarls who refuse to behave as servants. On the other hand, the Icecarls find the idea of Shadow magic disturbing and prohibit Tal's Shadowguard from behaving in a manner unlike a normal shadow on pain of death. The Icecarls too speak of a long ago past when they fought and drove the Shadows away. What could have happened and why do the Icecarls avoid contact with the denizens of the Castle when they are aware of them ?

All of these are interesting questions waiting to be answered as Tal starts his journey back to a hostile home with an equally hostile companion.
